Andrew Jansons, Wooster Art Space, 147 Wooster Street to January 27

These works by Andrew Jansons comprise a collection of paintings and works on paper the artist completed in the 1970s.  The main gallery is primarily dominated by medium to large sized abstractions done in acrylic.  Jansons was a pioneer in exploring the full range and potential of this medium when it was still in its infancy.  His interest was driven in part by practicality: in the early days he lived in a building which during the winter had no heat at night or on the weekends. A medium was required that would dry quicker than oils. He was able to successfully manipulate the t medium in such a way as to achieve the affects of oil painting.  Of particular interest in this show are several works on paper which easily stand up to the paintings as to their power of expression, texture and imagery despite their smaller proportions.
