Cleve Grey, Ameringer Yohe Fine Arts, 20 West 57th Street to December 23
This show includes work from the late 1970s and the late 1990s. The former is represented by paintings in which a solid painterly form is located on a field of even though slightly textured color. The latter paintings include linear tangled forms also placed on a field of color. In this case the forms interact with the ground embedding within it and creating a livelier result. It is this group of paintings that are the more satisfying due to the way they engage the entire picture plane. The 70s paintings present a more this versus that figure/ground relationship; a sort of take it or leave it attitude. The 90s paintings create an ambiguity for the relationship and are more interesting.
