Peter Acheson, Chris Martin, Andrew Masullo, Baumgartner Gallery, 522 West 24th Street to December 3
This is a very sweet show of mostly diminutive works with a most unconventional installation. Rather then only hang the paintings in a predictable way, a wall of Peter Acheson’s paintings are scattered across one wall, a massive black and white piece by Chris Martin dominates a nook and a tiny black and white painting by Andrew Masullo hangs all alone on a large wall. The latter work oddly complements and contrasts the large Martin piece. The combination of the 3 artists is perfect, starting with the (mostly) small dimensions of their paintings. But there are other similarities too like the sort of funky, somewhat surreal quality of abstraction that permeates the work. The unusual presentation of the show also plays into this.
