imagery captures qualities that are both personal and objective.  I see each of these pieces as presenting a personal narrative that goes public as a result of their abstractive qualities.  In other words, these paintings may or may not evoke personal stories for the artists but for the rest of us, the work is open enough that we are able to draw our own conclusions as to meaning.  In one of the best paintings in this show, Self Portrait, Lurking, Richter

has assembled a wonderful balance of color, texture and spatial handling.  Although he has included his initials to further emphasize the title, the whole ensemble truly achieves personal portraiture.  But the beauty part is in the indirectness of it and how much more open to interpretation this is as opposed to a straightforward depiction. With this body of work it is similarly the case that their true power is tied to the poetry wrapped up in the imagery and the skillful application of the medium.
