For the obsessives out there this show is for you. Fernando Garcia Correa likes to work with hand wrought patterns on simple backgrounds to create a visual effect. But this work moves beyond the definition of ‘effect’ to explore the region of patterns, rhythm and visual ‘noise’. Given the reductive quality of this work Garcia Correa nevertheless gets a lot of mileage out of it. Some pieces such as 79118NR1 include more then a bit of humor. In this case the image suggests any number of things. On one hand, I couldn’t help but see a reference to a circa 1950s movie mad scientist’s experiment gone horribly wrong. But equally, albeit in a more conceptual mode, I see a straightforward explosion of order; the grid blown up by forces of anarchy. So it goes, despite such a minimalist approach Garcia Correa offers a range of possibilities with this work from a basic sensuality captured in the materials, colors and repeated effects to match up between structured patterns and its slightly (or not) imprecise execution. |
