of a birds-eye view of landscape say, versus the strong quality of horizon found in the other work. Without Warning is another piece distinguished for its singularity but this time its the color and paint handling that are the factors. In contrast to the more expressive work this diminutive painting is quietly reductive and provides a respite for the eyes in a show full of other paintings demanding your attention.

It’s a risky business mixing up a disparate range of work but Neely pulls it off without compromising her style. I prefer it when artists include work that risks failure or otherwise challenges the viewer. But in this show the artist is consistent with her quality even as she pushes the envelope of her esthetic. If her style meanders throughout this body of work so what? I’ll take this ten times over a ‘series’ show which offers slight variations on the same painting. With this show the basic elements hold things together such as the abstracted landscape theme or how the paint and color are varied. This permits Neely to free-range around her boundaries and sometimes to jump a fence or two while taking us with her.
