Its a shame that these circumstances kept her out of the country when the New York School was going full throttle and the city was in the throes of achieving art capital status. Her work reflects a strength and tenacity that is perhaps derived from her ordeal with the U.S. government along with the remote and physically intense place she grew up. You see this in how these paintings are often self-possessed of a stark, ‘take it or leave it’, quality.
