BIOGRAPHY

Joe Walentini was born in 1953 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1976 from St. John’s University, Collegeville, Minnesota. In 1982 he received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  While at UNC he studied with the artist and critic, Peter Plagens who was then the department head along with the sculptor Julius Tobias, a visiting artist.

In 1985 Joe Walentini moved to New York City, living for seven years in Soho and three more in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. While living in New York he met and was influenced by the painters Edwin Ruda and Peter Pinchbeck. Through this association he became involved with what was loosely known as the Dante Group. In the late 80s and early 90s the Dante Group organized a number of group exhibitions of their work in and out of New York.

In 1995 Joe Walentini moved to Maplewood, New Jersey.  In 1999 he founded Abstract Art Online (http://www. abartonline.com), monthly art journal published on the Web. Abstract Art Online features criticism, artist profiles, essays, a conversations series, and links to related sites.  Since it’s founding, over 50 issues of Abstract Art Online have been published including over 300 exhibition reviews.
