There exist in certain areas of aesthetics a common sense of measure; in this I include poetry, or in musical practice, the pleasure in counting, breathing, waiting. Even in collecting instruments of measurement when I find them at the flea market, I find my fascination with a compulsion to measure, divide and join: quilts, the chime of a clock, tiled floors, garden plans, maps, rugs, mosaics.

Through this series, I explore how to use those things, decorative, as a medium of thought. I found a particular avenue for this through a study of games and the boards designed for them  it began with a chessboard I found at the flea market and on which I painted, using a shape derived from drawings I’d made of an hourglass, as

a way of contemplating the mystery of measured time.

The process of making these was a new approach for me, involving drafting tools: measuring, tracing, using straightedge and preparing a complete drawing which I then erased almost completely; but once the painting or collage began, I re-entered a more improvisational approach which led to different outcomes than I might have first planned.

In this work I continue my fascination with the inter-related phenomena of perception, physical sensation, emotion and thought. I explore their resonances through the visual tools of drawing, painting and collage.
